“Ghost Recon” by Ubisoft is not like most first-person shooters. Instead of scuttling down narrow corridors and unloading hails of bullets, the goal of the game is to advance slowly across large enemy battlefields via reconnaissance techniques, thus the title “Ghost Recon.” This slow-paced and highly realistic shooter is meant for older players, not just for the blood and gore but also for its unforgiving difficulty and the critical thinking involved.
In the year 2008, a group of Russian Ultranationalists seeks to restore the old Soviet Union. As the radicals attempt to retake Georgia, Latvia, and other former territories, war breaks out and the Ghosts are sent in.

New arrivals are encouraged to purchase a biohazard or bullet proof suit. 300 rounds of ammunition are recommended for any journeys that last longer than 2 hours. Medkits and food are an absolute necessity. And don’t forget: shoot anything that isn’t human, especially if it’s shooting back at you.

Lunar: Dragon Song is the first original game in the Lunar series in over a decade. Like the last game in the series, Lunar Legend, Dragon Song was published in the US by Ubisoft instead of the now-defunct Working Designs, the company responsible for localizing and publishing the rest of the series. Unfortunately, the difference in quality control shows.

In a day in which shooting games are the norm, I find it quite refreshing to be able to play a slow paced game in which suspense surrounds both the story and the action. “Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow” is just that. Featuring spies, diverse locales, and tons of gadgets, “Pandora Tomorrow” is bound to please anyone who is remotely interested in modern military espionage or stealth games. You duck in cover while trying to dodge a hail of enemy fire. Then, you rise and attack enemies with your high-tech plasma rifle. They go down easily, and then more bad guys appear. Guns blazing, you run out into the open and stylishly defeat your adversaries. Just as it seems the coast is clear, you get shot from behind by… a monkey?
This and other outrageous situations occur in TimeSplitters 2, a first-person shooter known for its frantic gameplay, strange humor, and loads of extra features.

The Wild West. The time of Cowboys, Indians and buried ancient treasure. That’s the theme set by Call of Juarez. Very few shooters and games for that matter tread into the Wild West territory. There’s a gold mine of material to choose from but the slower pace of Wild West battles may be what turns off most developers from this era. Techland have done a great job of bringing the feel of the Wild West to a game.

Joseph Turok is a Native American commando who can manhandle dinosaurs and kill them with a combat knife. The good news is that’s a pretty cool hook for what is an otherwise generic first-person shooter. The bad news is… it’s an otherwise generic first-person shooter that failed to earn distinction upon its release in February 2008. But if hunting dinosaurs and gunning down sci-fi mercenaries sounds like your thing, you’ll be pleased to know that while Turok is bloody enough to been rated “Mature” by the ESRB, the most graphic violence is committed against dinosaurs instead of human beings. This, in the eyes of some gamers, makes Turok a different animal than other recent first-person shooters.

“Splinter Cell: Double Agent” is the fourth installment of the “Splinter Cell” series, a popular franchise of stealth/action games. Although the Xbox version shares the same title as the 360 version, the two have differences in both gameplay and story events. The one being reviewed here is the Xbox version.
“Double Agent” revolves around black ops agent Sam Fisher and his infiltration of a domestic terror group called the JBA (John Brown’s Army). After Sam’s daughter is killed in a car accident, he feels he has nothing left to lose. In response to this tragedy, he teams up with his long time partner in the NSA, Irving Lambert, to undertake the most dangerous mission of his life: to stop the JBA by becoming a double agent.

Viking: Battle for Asgard is a hack-n-slash action adventure game steeped in Norse mythology. The war between the gods has spilled into the human world of Midgard, and the forces of good have placed their hope in the Viking warrior Skarin, their champion, the last hope for the mortal realm. Viking is one of the best hack-n-slash adventures to come along in recent years, and it is certainly the best yet to appear on next-generation consoles. But a number of glitches and a lack of innovation in the latter hours hold Viking back from true greatness. Viking’s gameplay and offensive content are comparable to Fable and God of War, with the main hangups being excessive gore and constant references to the Norse gods.
